Counting method
The series below is the national planning model. Figures denote authorised establishments, not claims about real-world Australian censuses or confirmed daily strength. Each person is assigned to one service and one category. Fleet Air Arm members belong to the Navy. Space and rocket personnel belong to the Air Force. Civilian defence-industry employment is not military manpower.
The 1946 row is a postwar transition establishment with recognised wartime reservists; the new national-service intake has not yet reached the later peacetime system. The fall in career Army strength by 1950 reflects demobilisation. Later growth follows population, territorial integration and technical training rather than an uninterrupted wartime mobilisation.

Service and population
The common four-to-six-year qualification normally combines two years of full-time duty with subsequent reserve obligations; extended technical careers may use longer active terms. The 2020 full-time national-service intake of 2.6 million is consistent with a planning cohort of about 1.3 million entering a two-year track each year in a 100-million-person population. Annual cohort size is an assumption, not an additional population census.
Reserve liability ordinarily ends at thirty. Family pauses, recognised wartime work, equivalent Singaporean military/public service and adapted technical or support duties remain available. Reserve figures are trained members within current liability; they do not include every adult who ever served. Actual readiness depends on training completion, medical status, equipment, crewing and maintenance.
The 2026 permanent Army remains the smallest professional branch. Large Army reserve numbers principally provide dispersed territorial and civil-defence capacity. Navy and Air Force training numbers include shore engineering, logistics, communications, healthcare and installation duties, not only ship crews and aircrew.
