Chronology

National timeline

National events from Indigenous and colonial foundations through federation, the 1936 divergence, Restoration and the Commonwealth’s position in 2026. The confirmed chronology includes the 1962 restricted test record, 1967 satellite, 1972 Vanuatu admission and subsequent statehood settlements.

  1. 1788

    Colonial settlement

    British settlement at Sydney begins the colonial period, alongside continuing Indigenous societies and the consequences of dispossession.

  2. 1901

    Australian federation

    The six founding colonies become states of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January.

  3. 1936–1939

    Mining boom and CPA growth

    Major mineral discoveries accelerate industrial expansion. Communist electoral support and militant industrial committees grow.

  4. 1940

    Three-way electorate

    Labor, the CPA and the combined non-Labor bloc account for approximately one-third each of the national vote.

  5. 1941

    Curtin ministry

    John Curtin becomes prime minister on 7 October, leading Labor with CPA parliamentary supply support.

  6. 1942

    Westminster adoption

    The adoption act receives assent on 9 October, retrospectively effective from 3 September 1939.

  7. 5–6 July 1945

    Curtin’s death and the coordinated uprising

    Curtin dies on 5 July; the CPA uprising begins on 6 July. Attacks on Canberra and state parliaments lead to the nine-month Restoration campaign.

  8. 6 April 1946

    Main Restoration campaign ends

    Nine months of armed restoration conclude. About 2,500 officials and civilians die across the uprising and repression. High Court supervised provincial tribunals try the leaders; Dixon is convicted and executed after trial.

  9. 1946

    Transitional elections and reconstruction

    A transitional Parliament and veterans’ congress supervise recovery under emergency guardianship. Morshead begins his governorship.

  10. 1946

    Civil Rights Charter

    Gay and lesbian people gain protection from persecution and freedom of civil marriage.

  11. 1946–1954

    Morshead governorship

    The first governor-general spans emergency administration and the civilian Compact; his commission is regularised in 1949.

  12. 1948

    Republic of China alliance

    Cooperation with Nationalist China establishes the continuous treaty partnership later maintained with Taiwan.

  13. 1949

    China war remains unresolved

    CGSC and the ROC enter the continuing conflict with the newly established CCP-led PRC. No final peace treaty is reached through 2020.

  14. 1949

    Parliamentary settlement

    The Crown and Service Compact restores civilian parliamentary government. Nathaniel Mercer becomes prime minister; reserved dismissal requires prior High Court approval.

  15. 1949

    Australia Sovereignty Act

    The new national act removes remaining external legislative and appellate authority while retaining the Crown.

  16. 1950–1953

    Korean War

    The enlarged intervention brings heavy casualties. The armistice remains on 27 July 1953; a parliamentary inquiry follows.

  17. 1951

    Swell Act

    Voluntary membership applications are restricted to island nations of Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

  18. 1952

    Papua New Guinea compact

    Papua and New Guinea enter an internally self-governing Commonwealth territory with local institutions and federal representation.

  19. 1952

    New Zealand state union

    A negotiated union after economic crisis admits New Zealand as a state, with Wellington as its capital.

  20. 1953

    The Great Southern Cross name

    The expanded federation adopts Commonwealth of the Great Southern Cross after New Zealand’s admission.

  21. 1954

    Civil defence and Japanese cooperation

    The Civil Defence Act establishes shelter requirements. A separate Industrial Cooperation Accord begins an early industrial partnership with Japan.

  22. 1955

    West Papua incorporation

    Australian forces establish control, followed by a Dutch transfer agreement. Indonesian claims continue.

  23. 1956

    East Timor invasion

    A regional crisis triggers the seizure of Portuguese East Timor. Contested integration is followed by later diplomatic regularisation.

  24. 1956

    Amphibious division

    The 2nd Australian Amphibious Division is founded around the 2 RAR tradition.

  25. 1958

    Bougainville territory

    Negotiations establish a separate Australian territorial administration.

  26. 1960

    Fiji joins

    A British transfer and local constitutional votes establish Commonwealth territorial status.

  27. 1962

    Concealed national nuclear test

    The restricted historical annex records the first national test. Government acknowledgement remains absent through 2026.

  28. 1963–1966

    Indonesian Confrontation

    Regional fighting and territorial disputes conclude in an uneasy armed peace that continues through 2020.

  29. 1964 and 1968

    Original missile families

    The M1 air-defence family enters service in 1964; the M2 coastal and ship-launched anti-ship system follows in 1968.

  30. 1965

    Solomon Islands admission

    The Solomon Islands enter as a separate territory with Honiara as capital.

  31. 1966

    Allied-Asian migration reform

    Approved Asian allies receive treaty-based permanent entry pathways during the Vietnam commitment.

  32. 1966

    Southern Dollar decimalisation

    The common decimal currency adopts 100 cents to the Southern Dollar.

  33. 1966–1972

    Nuclear fleet emerges

    The first Australian nuclear submarine enters service in 1966, missile cruiser in 1969 and carrier in 1972.

  34. 1967

    First national satellite

    The first Commonwealth satellite launch establishes the orbital programme under the Air Force’s space and rocket institution.

  35. 1968

    Nauru admission

    Nauru enters as a territory; Yaren district is the administrative centre.

  36. 1972, 1977, 1982

    Commonwealth-class carriers

    HMSCS Melbourne, HMSCS Sydney and HMSCS Australia successively create the three-nuclear-carrier force.

  37. 1972

    Vanuatu admission

    Vanuatu joins as a territory with its capital at Port Vila.

  38. 1975

    South Vietnam survives

    Continued Australian and regional support prevents the collapse of South Vietnam.

  39. 1975

    PNG statehood

    Papua New Guinea meets the public-service and institutional assessment and becomes a state, remaining separate from West Papua and Bougainville.

  40. 1980

    Naval F-111 enters service

    Four specialised branches begin the first service block. Each large nuclear carrier has a planned total wing of 72 aircraft across all types.

  41. 1980

    Fiji statehood

    Fiji becomes a state with Suva as capital, preserving its communities and customary institutions.

  42. 1982

    Falklands commitment

    An Australian nuclear carrier group, naval support, intelligence and replenishment assist Britain.

  43. 1985, 1995, 2003

    Naval Wing modernisation

    Successive aircraft blocks update weapons and flight systems. The later two editions adopt USN-inspired grey with Australian markings.

  44. 1990

    West Papua statehood

    West Papua becomes a state with Jayapura as capital and remains separate from PNG.

  45. 1991

    Soviet collapse

    The Soviet Union dissolves in 1991. Strategy shifts to remaining communist powers, regional instability and maritime pressure.

  46. 1995

    Queensland divides

    North Queensland and South Queensland become equal states, with capitals at Townsville and Brisbane. The council-based settlement keeps Rockhampton in the north and Gladstone in the south. North retains UTC+10 throughout the year; South adopts summer daylight saving.

  47. 1996

    New Zealand divides

    North and South Island become separate states, with capitals at Whangārei and Christchurch. Recognised outlying groups enter the Federal Pacific District administration.

  48. 1998–2006

    Vietnamese federation

    A joint commission begins in 1998, a Federal Compact is agreed in 2004 and peaceful federal reunification takes effect in 2006.

  49. 2005, 2012, 2019

    Federation-class successors

    HMSCS New Zealand, HMSCS Pacific and HMSCS Southern Cross replace the first nuclear carrier generation.

  50. 2016

    Commonwealth Network Crisis

    Supplier compromise disrupts logistics and administration. The High Court refuses to certify dismissal grounds, and a national recovery programme follows.

  51. 2020

    Mature Commonwealth

    Population reaches 100 million. Three principal carriers each have a planned total wing of 96 aircraft; nuclear electricity is about 50% of generation.

  52. 2020

    Singapore joins

    The Singaporean Act admits Singapore directly as a state following a locally supported response to Indonesian threats. Equivalent military or public service is recognised. Malaysia remains a sovereign partner.

  53. 2022

    Charles III succeeds

    The Crown’s succession follows Elizabeth II’s death. The parliamentary and service settlement continues.

  54. 2026

    National economic estimate

    The working estimate is 104 million residents and US$100,000 output per resident, producing nominal GDP of US$10.4 trillion.
